:: What is it all about?

Companies are complex systems. Their behaviour is as unpredictable as that of its environment. How complex systems work, how their design and structure are to be understood, was analysed and described in the middle of the 20th century. The most diverse interdisciplinary research has already developed the knowledge and models needed to build up and run a full functioning, purposeful, employee centric and customer focused agile company.

These foundations have been incorporated into the development of both, the laCoCa model and the laCoCa method.

The human organism and its anatomy are used as a reference in order to facilitate the understanding of how to design the model and to apply the method. The human being is one of the most agile complex systems in terms of its adaptability to environmental changes.

Three elements are needed to define and develop the structure and the operation of an agile company.

:: Capability

The business activities a company owns to implement its business, to manufacture and offer its products or services and to fulfil its purpose.

:: Cooperation

Self-organized cooperation and collaboration builds the basis on which all employees are able to interact and further develop the required business skills of their company in order to produce and offer every requested product or service.

:: Configuration

The structural configuration following the design of a heterarchy of agile teams and self-organized employees.

:: laCoCa Modell – Capability

Every agile company needs a range of general and supporting business capabilities. It interacts with the environment and, above all, with its customers and can adapt to the dynamics of changing influencing factors in order to be able to produce and / or offer its respective products and services according to identified needs. Just as the human organism can think, read, see or run, an agile company must be able to provide capabilities such as marketing, sales, logistics and accounting.

The business capabilities need to correspond to the respective objectives and performance portfolio of the company and must be continuously developed further and improved. This is the only way to immediately respond to changes in general conditions or external factors of influence.

The widely known business capability models of tailoristic hierarchical company designs, such as those developed by Robert S. Kaplan and Peter Norton, are unsuitable for the demands and the anatomy of an agile organisation. The laCoCa model was developed specifically for the dynamics of the digital economy and meets the special requirements of a demanding and iterative adaptability of a complex and agile system.

:: laCoCa Methode - Cooperation

As the second element, the laCoCa method provides the basis for an iterative co-operation and collaboration between agile teams and self-governing employees. With its help, it is possible to ensure both the continuous development and use of innovations, the design and manufacture of new products and service, as well as to satisfy dynamic customer requirements directly and flexibly.

The requirements of customers and markets are always at the centre of all considerations and procedures and are dealt with in accordance with the purpose of the company its own organization.

:: LaCoCa Heterarchy - Configuration

Business capabilities are performed by the employees through an agile organisation in a network of self-organized teams. The development of such a heterarchy allows every employee to directly and continuously adapt any capability, process or interaction as soon as the environment requires it, especially customers. The cooperation of all agile teams is based on the laCoCa method to allow a performant iterative interaction.

The design of an agile organisation must be as simple as possible in order to allow changes and continuous improvements with little effort. The laCoCa heterarchy provides this blueprint and the principles of an agile configuration.
